I understand President Christodoulides’ speech at the United Nations General Session as an indication that he is not trying to simply align Cyprus with the EU. His aim is rather to give the island greater weight within a complex region. Through clear positioning and close cooperation with European partners, he seeks to make Cyprus more visible, strengthen its negotiating position, and create conditions that support security and investment. This is not about adaptation, but about smart strategic placement in an environment that is otherwise difficult for small states to navigate. This approach shows that Cyprus is pursuing its own path – one that protects the island’s interests, strengthens its role, and enables stable and future-proof development in the long term.
